Coolant, intake air and exhaust temperature sensors help the ECU decide fuelling, boost and protection strategies. Faulty readings can ruin drivability — and a remap.

Key temperature sensors on modern engines

  • Coolant temperature sensor (ECT) — warm-up enrichment, fan control, idle strategy
  • Intake air temperature (IAT) — air density and ignition/fuelling corrections
  • Exhaust gas temperature (EGT) — protection on turbos and aftertreatment systems
  • Oil temperature — on many performance and newer platforms
  • AdBlue / SCR tank heaters — temperature control for urea systems on Euro 6 diesels

What happens when a sensor fails?

The ECU may substitute a default value, run rich or lean, limit boost, or trigger limp mode. Drivers often notice poor cold running, incorrect gauge behaviour, or higher fuel use.

Temperature sensors and remapping

Maps rely on accurate temperature inputs for safe boost and fuelling. A stuck-cold coolant sensor, for example, can keep the engine in rich warm-up mode. We review live data before writing a Stage 1 or economy calibration.
