Oxygen sensors tell the ECU whether the mixture is rich or lean. They’re critical for economy, emissions and a stable remap.

What does an O2 sensor do?

An O2 sensor (lambda sensor) measures oxygen in the exhaust. The ECU uses that signal to trim fuel injection so the mixture stays close to the target air–fuel ratio. Most cars have at least one sensor before the catalytic converter and one after.

Upstream vs downstream sensors

  • Pre-cat (upstream) — controls closed-loop fuelling
  • Post-cat (downstream) — monitors catalytic converter efficiency

Common O2 sensor fault symptoms

  • Engine management light
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions / MOT concerns
  • Stored lambda or fuel-trim fault codes

Why O2 sensors matter before remapping

If a sensor is slow, contaminated or failed, the ECU can’t control fuelling accurately. Remapping a car with bad lambda feedback risks unstable running. We check for sensor and fuel-trim issues during diagnostics. Related: catalytic converters and temperature sensors.
