Types of ECUs explained

Not every engine computer is the same. The ECU brand and generation decide how we read it, write it, and what a Stage 1 map can safely unlock.

Reading different ECU types during remapping

An ECU (Engine Control Unit) is the brain of the engine. Manufacturers use different suppliers and hardware generations — which is why remapping methods vary from car to car across Greater Manchester.

Common ECU manufacturers

  • Bosch — widely used across VW, BMW, Mercedes, Vauxhall and many others (EDC/MED families on diesels and petrols)
  • Continental / Siemens — found on many Ford, PSA, Renault and other platforms
  • Delphi — common on certain diesels and commercial vehicles
  • Denso — frequent on Japanese and some European models
  • Marelli — used by various European makers

Why ECU type matters for remapping

Petrol vs diesel ECUs

Petrol ECUs manage ignition, mixture and (on turbos) boost. Diesel ECUs focus heavily on injection quantity, timing, rail pressure and torque models — plus emissions systems such as DPF, EGR and AdBlue on newer vehicles.
