What does an EGR valve do?
The EGR system routes a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake. That lowers combustion temperatures and reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. Petrol and diesel engines both use EGR, though diesel systems are often more prone to soot build-up.
Common EGR problems
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Engine management light and EGR-related fault codes
- Excessive smoke or poor economy
- Stuck open/closed valves from carbon deposits
- Knock-on soot loading of the DPF
Legal solutions
- Clean or replace the EGR valve and cooler
- Address intake carbon where needed
- Fix related turbo, injector or sensor faults
- Keep short-trip driving from permanently blocking the system where possible
EGR and remapping
A healthy EGR system should stay active on road cars. Stage 1 and economy remaps from Torque Lab Ltd are written with emissions equipment intact. If your EGR is faulty, repair it first — then consider a remap for better performance.
